Description

Bowen & Owen’s Map of Gloucestershire military historyThis map of Gloucestershire was engraved by Emanuel Bowen for John Owens Britannia Depicta, a pocket road book derived from Ogilbys innovative atlas of strip maps first published in 1675. Bowen & Owenss work first appeared in 1720 and proved extremely popular; there were numerous editions over the next forty years. Condition & Materials Copper engraving, 18 x 12 cm, recent hand colour, b w strip maps on verso.

owing to the small format of the map

although most of the European knowledge of the region in the first part of the 18th century was via Jesuit and Capuchin missionaries

in April 1839

His map of Leicestershire is dedicated to Theophilus Hastings (1650-1701)

as a young man

featuring a ‘thermos flask’ shaped Circle Line

Dibdin describes both of the editions of Pieter Burman the elder as excellent: the first was published in 1719

Partially illegible ownership signature (Wilkins) to volume one

His series of geographical maps were published 1956-1969

so 1841 seems most likely

Another unusual design feature is the two tone shading (in line colours) of the names of interchange stations

Cary is perhaps best known for his English county atlases
